What is DTF Printing? Complete Guide 2026
DTF (Direct-to-Film) printing is a revolutionary digital transfer process that prints designs onto a special PET film, applies adhesive powder, and transfers to fabric using heat press.
How DTF Printing Works
- Print: Design is printed onto PET film using CMYK + White ink
- Powder: Hot-melt adhesive powder is applied to wet ink
- Cure: Powder is melted at 110-130°C for 60-120 seconds
- Press: Transfer is heat-pressed onto fabric at 150-165°C
- Peel: Film is peeled off (hot or warm depending on system)
Key Benefits of DTF Printing
- Works on Any Fabric: Cotton, polyester, blends, nylon, leather - no pretreatment needed
- Full Color Prints: CMYK + White underbase for vibrant colors on dark fabrics
- No Weeding: Unlike HTV, no manual weeding required
- Durable: 50+ wash durability with proper application
- Cost-Effective: Lower setup cost than screen printing for small runs
DTF vs Other Printing Methods
| Method | Best For | Setup Cost | Cost Per Unit |
|---|---|---|---|
| DTF | Small-medium runs, full color | Low | Medium |
| Screen Printing | Large bulk orders | High | Low |
| DTG | Cotton only, small runs | Medium | High |
| HTV | Simple designs, text | Low | High (labor) |
